Previously, crossing the sea was dangerous and complicate. The crossings were carried out by fishermen, who, at the request of the travelers, agreed or refused to take them on board.

In 1917 the Council decided to create and manage its first public shipping company. Steamboats provides connections with the islands 2 to 3 times a week.

IN 1992, by public service delegation, the Departmental Council entrusted the Penn ar Bed shipping company, a subsidiary of the KEOLIS group, with the mission of ensuring maritime services to the islands of Ouessant, Molène and Sein.

Today, this fleet of 6 ships makes 1,520 rotations each year, enabling 330,000 trips per year. Every day, all year round, sailors, hostesses but also forklift operators, administrative and commercial services, there are 120 people who work together to guarantee you the crossing to the islands of Ouessant, Molène and Sein. Boardings for Ouessant are made from Brest, Le Conquet or Audierne.
